a room of my own

over the past year, i have completely hippie-fied my room to make it my own. it started out as an empty space with an ikea bed and bedside table. then i added a great blue dresser (also from ikea). next came the tapestries (above my bed-courtesy of amsterdam, and on the dresser-courtesy of my fabulously stylish grandma).

when you look at the room now, you'll see there is art everywhere. some of it which i've done myself, some of which i found at flea markets, all of it beautiful. one of my favorites is the poster above the built in desk, which is over 75 years old! the thoreau quote on it reads, "all good things are wild and free." which is so true.

finds from flea markets include: a painted rocking chair with african print fabric, a turquoise bedside table, ceramic tiles on the shelves, turquoise shelve (that is not hung up yet), and much more.

since the bed is at the center of the room, i thought it deserved an awesome cover. i found this sweet african printed tapestry on sale at urban, which used to be on it. but recently i invested in a quilt from anthroplogie (which due its price im sure i will be using on every bed of mine for the next 20 years..). but that's ok because its gorgeous. also from anthro: the green lantern hanging above the built in desk, the painted vase on the top left shelve, and probably a few other things...

there are also indian pillows on the bed from flea markets in amsterdam, and various other places...

and finally, the key to an arty room, one word: paint. i painted a desk i found in the alley a mustard yellow (one of my fav colors for a room). i also painted both of my lampshades, which i found at goodwill. painted my polaroid camera too..but that doesn't really count. and hey if your an artist, why not paint a canvas and hang it up?

other things on the walls include vintage records framed (frames from urban). on the list is: beatles compilation which i found at camden market in london, a holiday album found on etsy, and another two colorful/collagy looking ones from yard sales. on the door frame there are wooden letters spelling out love, bringing love to me all day every day (quote from sex and the city movie DUH). these are sold seperately at urban, you can spell out any word you want. each one is patterned differently. hanging from the window is the evil eye, which is meant to protect me from all evil. hopefully it's working....

so here are some pictures iv'e taken to remember my love of a room. hopefully i can reproduce it in whatever room i end up in next. i apologize for the bad quality, im out of a camera so i had to use my computer to take the pictures. enjoy and get inspired...
